Mehul V. Raval

Mehul V. Raval, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP, Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Mehul V. Raval, MD, MS, FACS, FAAP is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He is a clinical pediatric surgeon at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and serves as the Lurie system lead for surgical quality improvement. Dr. Raval is a Principal Investigator in the Northwestern University Department of Surgery’s Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Center. He currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Quality and Safety Committee for the American Pediatric Surgical Association as well as the Vice-Chair of the Delivery of Surgical Care Committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Raval leads several quality and process improvement initiatives for the Lurie system and is actively involved several national efforts. His research portfolio includes R01 funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to assess the value of surgical care at specialized children’s hospitals compared to non-children’s hospitals. He is also funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study opioid stewardship practices for children undergoing surgery and by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America to study enhanced postoperative recovery pathways for children with inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Raval has published more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific articles and authored 12 book chapters/invited reviews on quality improvement and outcomes research topics.

Dr. Raval obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. H obtained his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine during which time he completed a one year Doris Duke Foundation Clinical Research Fellowship. He completed his General Surgery residency training at Northwestern during which he also served as a Clinical Research Scholar a the American College of Surgeons and obtained his Master’s degree in outcomes research from Northwestern University. Dr. Raval completed his Pediatric Surgery Clinical Fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Ohio State University. His first faculty position was at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University where he also served as Director of Research for Pediatric Surgery, Director of the Center for Outcomes Research and Public Health, and Co-Director of the Atlantic Pediatric Device Consortium. Dr. Raval joined the faculty at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital/Northwestern University in July of 2018.
